THE VISIT

The night was full of you —
    In my exiled aloneness
    I thought of you
    Because I had told the world:
    I had written our story,
    Been evaluated,
        criticized,
            praised,
                released.
                        I thought .. .

But then you came.
    In my insomniac darkness
    You entered
    Through moonbeams
        and starbeams,
            through dreams,
                past recollections.
                    Softly, painlessly
                        you spoke my name
                            and I awoke.
The night was full of you.
